Obituary of Louis Maas

Scotia - Louis I. Maas, age 88, formerly of Mountainside, NJ, died on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at his home in Scotia, NY, surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marge; his five children, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Louis is also survived by his brother, Richard, and was predeceased by his brother, Gerald.
Lou was born on July 11, 1925 in New York City. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the occupation forces in Japan. Lou graduated from Hobart College with a B.A. in Political Science.
He was co-founder of Spruce Industries in Garwood, NJ. Among his achievements were serving on the Boro Council in Mountainside, NJ, playing a significant role in fund raising for a playground for the Boys & Girls Club Craig St. clubhouse, earning the Point of Light Award for community service and being part of an Honor Flight for veterans to Washington D.C. At his camp on Lake Snow, he fished, hiked, hunted and enjoyed all things outdoors. Lou was a gentle man, a voracious reader and a student of WWII history. He will be missed in so many ways by so many people.
A viewing will be held on Monday, July 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady, NY. A funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Church, 812 Union St., Schenectady, NY, on Tuesday, July 23 at 10 a.m. Lou will be laid to rest Wednesday 10:30 a.m. at Saratoga National Cemetery 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY.
Donations can be made in Lou's name, to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Schenectady, P.O. Box 466, Schenectady, NY 12301-0466. (Please designate the Craig St. Clubhouse), or to The Community Hospice Foundation, 195 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144. (Please designate the Schenectady office).
The Maas family would like to thank the Community Hospice of Schenectady for helping us to give Lou loving care and a peaceful end.
