Obituary of Charles Seber

Schenectady - Charles "Charlie" Seber, 88, of Naples, FL passed away Friday morning, November 1, 2013 with his family by his side. Born October 10, 1925 in Schenectady, NY, he was the son of Charles W. and Barbara (Young) Seber. He graduated from Nott Terrace High School in 1942 and attended Union College. Charlie served in the US Army Air Corp from 1943 to 1946. He was the chief Investigator for the Schenectady County Sheriff's Dept., Police Court Clerk for the City of Schenectady, owned and operated Secon Security for many years and retired in 1984 as chief of security for Capital District Regional Off Track Betting Corp. As a child he appeared in more than 200 performances on WGY radio. In 1940, he won the Schenectady Soap Box Derby. Charlie was a manager of the Youth Baseball League, one of the founders of the Schenectady Babe Ruth League and led the League of All Stars to three state championship tournaments, winning in 1956. In 1992, he was inducted into the Schenectady Baseball Club Hall of Fame. Charlie served on the Schenectady City Council from 1972 to 1976. On April 3, 1948, Charlie married Anne Osborne. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years on November 1, 1999, and his two sisters, Mildred Glennon and Lucille Frankwitt. He is survived by six children, Mark Seber (Andrea) of Mechanicville, Bill Seber (Lauren) of Blue Ridge, GA, Robert Seber of New York City, NY, Michael Seber (Missy) of Clifton Park, NY, Patricia Wade (Chris) of Rexford, NY and Susan Arena (Larry) of Rowley, MA. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren, Mark Seber, Jr. (Tanya), Geoff Seber, Michael Seber (Jen), Nathan Seber, Marissa Allen (Lee), Sara Seber, Tanya Seber, Tara Riha (Ben), Dylan Seber, Gage Seber, Ryan Seber, Morgan Seber, Matthew Schaffer, Rachel Schaffer, Breah Mihok (Justin), Taygen Long, Cameron Arena and Tanner Arena, along with 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, November 4 at 6 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 816 Union Street, Schenectady. Interment will be private. Family and friends can call Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Melmark New England, Servicing Autism, 461 River Road, Andover, MA 01819. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Saratoga Hospital for taking care of Charlie during his last days.
