Schenectady - Leon J. Bittner, 90, of Raymond St. died Thursday, February 6, 2014, at the Joan Nicole Prince Home, surrounded by his loving family. Leon was born in Schenectady, the son of Leon and Rose Bittner. He was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School and was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as an MP during World War II in England. He enjoyed the years he was a bartender in the Schenectady area, especially at The Plaza and The Union Inn, and he retired many years ago from the Lower Mohawk Club, where he worked as a night manager for many years. He was an avid Yankee fan. Leon's favorite pastime was time spent with his family, especially on holidays and birthday parties. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Winifred Rogowski Bittner; two children, David (Lori) Bittner and Adriane (Jack) Walrath; a brother and sister, Charles Bittner and Rosie Brown; beloved grandchildren, Jason (Johna), Derek and Kaitlyn Bittner, John Walrath, Shannon (Brian) Cechnicki; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four siblings, Stanley and Richard Bittner, Vickie Thomas and Elsie Richards. Funeral service Tuesday 12 noon at the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. Calling hours Monday night 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Interment Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna with military honors.
