I met and became friends with Dick through the M&P Golf league. He was always an enthusiastic golfer and gentlemen and I am proud to have known him. Among the times he and I played against one another one day stands out, mainly because of the weather. It was a grey cold rainy day and it looked like it would plague then entire round. Many in the league decided to forgo playing but not Dick. He wanted to go out, and I was (and in hindsight perhaps) foolish enough to out and play our match. We had some competitive holes, and he may have won the day, but we were cold and drenched to the core at the end, finishing in near darkness. This was probably three years ago so Dick was about 83. I only hope I have that kind of dedication, enthusiasm, desire and fortitude at that age! I'll miss him.

I speak for Heritage Hunters as well as myself when I offer our sympathy and prayers to the Elwell family. Dick was a valued member of Heritage Hunters of Saratoga County NY, a group dedicated to the study and preservation of genealogical and historical materials. Dick submitted several well-researched and well-written articles for our newsletter and added to our meetings and conferences with his presence. We will miss you Dick. We remain grateful for your contributions to family and local history. Pat Peck and the members of Heritage Hunters

I had the privilege of golfing with Dick for many years in the M&P Lab golf league at Stadium on Thursday evenings. He also invited me to play at Ballston Spa with him a few years ago. Dick was a kind and generous man. He often shared stories with us about the "old days" in the M&P league. My favorite story was how the losing teams would have to caddy for the winning teams during the playoff round. I could just picture in my mind the camaraderie and deep respect they had for each other. We will all miss his stories and his company at dinner after the round on Thursday nights.
Dick was also one of the fastest golfers in the league. I never saw him take a practice swing. He would march right up to the ball and hit it without all the baggage most of us other golfers setup with. And his shots went straight and well enough to make us slow-pokes wonder why we do those setup things. It will be darker now when we finish without Dick moving things along.
Sincerely,
Bob Falsetti

My sincere condolences to all of Dick’s family on his passing. I remember Dick as one of the first persons who made me feel a part of this area when I first came to work in Schenectady, and most all thank him for getting me into the M&P Golf League back in 1990. Since then we always looked forward to league matches together. For the last few years Dick was my playing partner in our league’s outings, and I now treasure even more those special times. Besides golf, we went to a few AMSE/STLE tours together, and I still have a picture he took at the Mechanicville Hydroelectric Plant that we toured a few years ago hanging in my office. I could even count on him helping with my own job, where one league night we were matched together, and on one tee I mentioned a bearing issue I was working on, and low and behold, a couple days later I get a letter from Dick with a paper he wrote years back outlining the cause and solution. He enjoyed talking about his family’s activities and always asked about mine. Dick, you’ll be missed, but always remembered. Dan Fitzmorris

Marg - What fond memories my college roommate, Ed Schwarz and I have of our trip to Potsdam this past July with Dick. Dick and I related to a lot ofSaratoga County history as we went North. I even shared with him where I lived in Batchlerville and started 1st grade. These memories will be with me forever as will the memories Dick shared with me when he lived in Ballston Spa. I have tried to contact Ed but he may have gone south to get out of MI for a while. Dick always enjoyed my parents when ever we had the opportunity to meet to travel back to college together and you know how we will miss him too. God bless you for allowing us that precious time we had this past summer. - Ralph
