Obituary of Thomas Meaney
Please share a memory of Thomas to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Schenectady - Thomas Francis Meaney passed away on January 5, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.
Tom was born on July 2, 1933, the son of the late Marie McGillin Meaney and Peter Meaney.
A lifelong Schenectadian, he graduated from St. Columba's High School in 1951.
Tom then proudly served as a member of the United States Navy aboard the USS Orion submarine tender ("wooden ships and iron men") from 1952 to 1956. He went on to graduate from Siena College in 1961 with a B.S. degree in Economics. He was joined in marriage to Lina J. LaMarca of Rotterdam in 1962. Tom worked for 35 years as a representative for the United States Social Security Administration.
For many years, Tom was a member of the Knights of St. John (Commandery 100). Of strong faith, he was a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church.
In addition to his rapier wit, Tom possessed a keen knowledge of history, current world events and politics. He was an avid reader, forever curious. He was dignified and loyal and will be remembered for his extraordinary sense of humor and ability to "tell a really good joke and a really good story."
Besides his parents, Tom was predeceased by his wife Lee in 1995. He will be dearly missed by his children Erin Catrambone (Tom), Ellen Aschbrenner, Tara Meaney, Thomas Meaney (Kelly Madden) and Heather Meaney; grandchildren Alexander Meaney, Emaleigh Aschbrenner, Mikaela Aschbrenner and Benjamin Catrambone; sisters Noreen DeLai of Reading, Mass., and Sandra (William) Paffenback of Catonsville, Md.; several nieces and nephews, and many lifelong friends (who will appreciate that as he was saying farewell, Francis Albert was playing in the background).
Funeral services will take place on Monday, January 11, at 9:15 a.m. at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street in Schenectady, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Interment with military honors will take place at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Calling hours will take place on Sunday, January 10 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the City Mission of Schenectady, 425 Hamilton St., Schenectady, NY 12305.
