To know Elaine makes one special...makes one...friend of Mother Theresa, John Lennon, Michaleangelo, Emily Dickinson, Thomas Merton, Peter Pan, and Glinda. To be with Elaine...is to experience profoundly rare intimacy with the Immense, the Divine, the Perpetual. To love and beloved by Elaine is anointment bestowed on the very very fortunate. How grateful I am for her presence in my life.

My friends have shaped me. Growing up in an ultra-conservative family, I knew early that I didn't belong. So at a young age, I looked elsewhere... and found a sense of belonging in, and longing for, families of my friends. One of course was the Ognibenes.
I vividly recall meeting Beth's mom, Elaine, as a middle school student. Then, and for all the years to follow, I was intrigued by and admired her education, her independence, her strong voice on womens' issues, her deep interest in a range of pressing social issues.
I fondly recall as a child seeing Elaine's dinner parties; hearing the energized, engaging literary discussions with students and friends; and being inspired by her class and intellect.
We often don't realize the impact that we have on others. Elaine whetted my appetite to advance my education, and work to strike a balance between career, family, and healthy physical activity, making each a priority.
Unfortunately, I never told Elaine how she impacted my life. Her daughter, Beth, has remained one of my closest friends (now for over 40 years), and has succeeded to be the Mom that embodies these traits and values. Clearly Elaine's life has positively impacted so many. She will be dearly missed.

Dear Beth, Rich, Chris, & Mr. Dr. O,
I was shocked, and heart broken to learn that Ms. Dr. O had passed. Some of my fondest memories of growing up on Story Avenue are of spending time at your home with your family: having Ms. Dr. O take me driving so I could get my license (she was a brave woman!), having tea and Pepperidge Farm Milano cookies and homemade pizza in your kitchen (the heart of your home), sitting in the living room on a cold winter night listening to Jackson Brown and praying for a snow day, eating popcorn curled up in the TV room, and so much more . In graduate school I taught at Siena as an adjunct professor, and was lucky to get some valuable feedback from Ms. Dr. O about my teaching which I took to heart, and I know it has made me a better professor. All this to say that, as others have acknowledged, she was an amazing woman with an amazing family, and she will be sorely missed.
Peace and love,
Cathy Forneris

To the entire Ognibene family (and especially you, Chris, my old Nisky classmate), all my condolences for your loss. My folks shared this very sad news the other day, and I just had a chance to read the wonderful obituary in the Gazette. Elaine was an amazing person. I hope the grief you're experiencing now is balanced, in part, by the wonderful legacy and memories she gifted to you.
Very best wishes,
Glenn

My heart goes out to all of your family. I so fondly recall teaching both Elizabeth and Christopher during their middle school years at Niskayuna. I remember your mom as one who, while busy working at her own teaching job, took the time to get to know me and talk with me about innovative teaching methods. I was still a new educator and very excited to meet someone who had looked deeply at educational methods. I loved reading of her "Camelot experience" in Rochester at the Lourdes school. May Elaine's/your mom's spirit continue to guide and support you in this time. Marni (Schwartz) Gillard.

Elaine was among the first to warmly welcome us to the Siena and Schenectady communities. She was always gracious, delightful and smart and it was fun to exchange a few words with her in Italian. Our deepest condolences to all those who loved Elaine.

My commiserations to the family. May fond memories of your mother bring you comfort during this hard time in your life. Look back on all the good memories you were able to have and smile at the fact that you were able to share these before she passed away. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family.
P.S. I have a feeling that she would still advise you to eat salmon and veggies without butter.
Hugs xoxo

Dick & family,
My sincerest condolences... I knew Elaine both as one of her students at Siena & as a neighbor in Niskayuna. She was a beautiful person and always there to offer a kind word or quick smile as she made her way around the neighborhood on the walks she loved to take.
I pray for her peaceful rest & for healing for you all.
Respectfully,
Marialana
