Obituary of Francis Conway
Please share a memory of Francis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Clifton Park - Francis John Conway entered into eternal life peacefully, and surrounded by his family, on Saturday, January 25, 2014. Born in Schenectady, he was the son of the late Matthew Conway and Anna Slattery Conway. Francis graduated from Mont Pleasant High School. After serving his country in the Korean War, he graduated from Siena College in 1959. Subsequently, he earned master's degrees in history and guidance and joined the faculty of the Schenectady City Schools, where, as a teacher and guidance counselor, he completed a 36-year career in service to his students. Defined by his Catholic faith, he was a daily communicant of Saint Edward the Confessor Church in Clifton Park and Saint John the Evangelist in Schenectady. An avid traveler, he was ever anxious to share this passion with friends and family, organizing and embarking on elaborate European and Caribbean explorations. The garden masterpieces he created brought color and beauty to all those who passed his home. His love of music and the theatre was stated through annual subscriptions to the programs of several of the region's fine repertory companies. Of all the joys in his life, his love of family was foremost. Always last on his own list, his customary offering was, whatever you need. His uncommon generosity and unfailing loyalty are the foundation on which his family will continue to thrive. A giant of a man, he leaves a legacy rich with treasured memories. The grief that we feel at his loss can never match the joy of having known him. Our only regret is that no amount of time with him would have been enough. Francis is survived by his wife, the love of his life, Barbara Leonard Conway: by his three daughters, Ann Conway of Schenectady, Mary Conway Hanchar (Stephen) of Princetown, and Theresa Conway Lewis (Eric) of Clifton Park; and by his devoted grandchildren, Joseph and Veronica Lewis and Elizabeth and Christopher Hanchar, for whom Granddaddy was so much more than the word can describe. He was predeceased by his brother, Matthew Conway, and is also survived by his brothers, Patrick Conway of Syracuse, Joseph Conway of Colonie, John Conway of Cape Cod, MA; his sister, Elizabeth Jagelski of Keene, NH; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service Wednesday at 10:15 in the morning at the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady. Mass of Christian Burial at Saint John the Evangelist Church, Schenectady at 11 o'clock in the morning. Calling hours Tuesday afternoon 4 to 7 in the evening at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors at Saint Joseph's Cemetery in Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to The Academy of the Holy Names, 1073 New Scotland Rd., Albany, New York 12208.
